About Florence Villa
North Winter Haven holds one of Polk County's most historically significant neighborhoods, laid out along Havendale Boulevard and the streets running toward US-92. Dr. Frederick William Inman and his wife Florence Jewett Inman arrived in the early 1880s, bought property north of the young village and planted an orange grove, hiring Dan Laramore, a Black Seminole, as horticulturalist. After a devastating freeze in 1886 wiped out the citrus, the Inmans converted their home into a hotel named Florence Villa in her honor.
The settlement that grew around that hotel incorporated as its own town in 1917 and operated independently until merging with Winter Haven in 1923. It became the largest of the city's historic African American communities, with churches, businesses and schools anchoring generations of families. Dr. Mary B. Jewett, Florence Inman's sister and a physician who moved south in 1910, donated land and advocated for education, and area schools have long carried her name.
