About Eloise
Sitting in the heart of Polk County between Eagle Lake and Winter Haven, Eloise straddles US-17 and Snively Avenue on the south side of its namesake lake. Lake Eloise covers roughly 1,174 acres, making it one of the larger bodies of water in the county and a major link in the southern Chain of Lakes. Surveyor John Westcott named it in 1849 after Eloise Moody, daughter of county pioneer Benjamin F. Moody.
Community history reaches back to the 1890s, when around 250 people homesteaded the land south of the lake. A rail station opened in 1896 and became the hub for shipping tomatoes and vegetables north to distant markets. The largest economic shift came in 1934, when John and Tom Snively opened Polk Packing Company, and for generations afterward Eloise housed the workers who kept the region's citrus industry running. The eastern shore now holds Legoland Florida, on ground where Cypress Gardens welcomed visitors from 1936 until 2009.
