About Dover
Rural Hillsborough County stretches between Brandon and Plant City, and Dover occupies the middle of it along the State Road 574 and US-92 corridors. Settlement dates to 1854, when the DeShong family arrived from Gwinnett County, Georgia, and homesteaded 80 acres near what is now Gallagher Road. The community answered to Sydney and then Cork before the postmaster settled on Dover in 1890. Florida's first out-of-state carload of strawberries rolled from here in 1897, and local schools were long called strawberry schools because children studied six months a year and picked fruit the rest. That heritage still shows every spring at the Florida Strawberry Festival in Plant City.
