South of Bartow along Agricola Road, Barcola occupies the middle of Florida's Bone Valley, the phosphate district that has shaped Polk County economics for well over a century. Deposits formed here when shallow seas covered the peninsula millions of years ago, leaving rock rich enough to make Florida the largest phosphate producer in the country. Mining began in the 1880s, and the region eventually supported hundreds of operations, drawing workers into small settlements built around mines and rail lines.
Names on the map still point back to that industry, and Agricola itself was one of the company communities scattered through the district. Reclamation law arrived in 1975 and required mined land to be restored, so pits and spoil banks across the Bartow, Lakeland and Mulberry triangle gradually became lakes, pasture and homesites. Barcola today reads as rural Polk County, with wide-open acreage, quick access to State Road 60 and a short run into Bartow, the county seat established in 1851.
